Episode 3 script: The Thing in the Crawlspace

Episode 3: The Thing in the Crawlspace

By Grace Antiedu

I couldn’t breathe.

There was something thumping behind the crawlspace wall now.

Slow, steady, like a heartbeat too large to be human.

I grabbed my brother’s hand.
It was cold. Wet .Like he’d been holding it inside a stream. Or a grave.

“Come on,” I gasped. “You’re not staying here”. He blinked.

For a second, just a second, something flickered in his eyes. Recognition. Fear.

Then the crawlspace door slammed open behind him.

And a hand reached out.
Not a child’s hand.

Long. Grey. Fingers bent the wrong way.

Nails jagged like stone.
It didn’t grab him.
It pointed at me....

whispering through the crack beneath the crawlspace door.

“I didn’t forget,” he said. “I remember what happened to Nana. You said I could stay if I remembered".

There was no one named Nana in our family.
When I asked my parents, their faces went pale.

They said Nana was my twin brother.

He died when we were babies. They never told my younger brother. He wasn’t even born then.

So how did he know?

I confronted him, trembling. He just looked at me, head tilted.

“Tomi told me,” he said. “Tomi eats the memories people throw away. That’s how he grows. He’s been eating Nana’s for a long time". I searched the crawlspace that night.

What I found were baby clothes, soaked with something dark. A stuffed toy that hadn’t belonged to us. And a photograph -of me as a baby, with someone beside me.

But the other child’s face had been scratched out .....from the inside of the frame. The end of episode 3. Coming up: Episode 4. Keep watching.
